Join us for an insightful discussion on the Korean Wave (Hallyu) and its global impact. This talk will explore how South Korean popular culture has expanded worldwide, from its beginnings in the 1990s with television exports to its current dominance in music, fashion, and cuisine. The discussion will also examine the key factors behind Hallyu’s success, including industry ambitions, government support, and the role of international fan communities in shaping its growth. Leading the conversation is Dr. Doobo Shim, a professor of media and communication at Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul. With extensive research on Korean popular culture and global media industries, Dr. Shim has held positions at the National University of Singapore and visiting appointments at Duke University, Fu Jen Catholic University, and Yonsei University. His expertise provides a critical and historical perspective on the forces driving Hallyu’s influence today.
