“Zainichi” is born and reborn through the narratives of and about Zainichi. The reference Zainichi elucidates the origin, history, and legacy of the formerly colonized Koreans in Japan, whose descendants continue to challenge oppressive and discriminatory structural powers. Now spanning up to the fifth generation, Zainichi stands at a threshold. It is a sense of urgency to seize a fleeting history, a critical moment that Zainichi share with diasporic peoples across borders. an international fusion of voices by and about Zainichi taps into polyphony of intellectuals, grassroots social activists, and alltags-actors centering “Zainichi” within the realm of a global dialogue on colonial legacies of violence and displacement and postcolonial attempts at defining and redefining the former migrants and their descendants.
